There's Northing Basic about Helicopter Operations on Yachts and Maritime Aviation
Helicopter operations must be treated as independent maritime aviation programs on yachts
During my visit to the Monaco Yacht Show, one thing stood out beyond the impressive yachts: the buzz about “toys” and their use at destinations. Here’s why helicopters should be more than just another yacht accessory.
1️⃣ Design vs. Reality
Yacht designers often overlook commercial aviation regulations when adding helidecks. This creates a problem for yachts transitioning to charter use—design limitations can prevent compliance with commercial aviation standards, making their helicopters unusable for paying guests.
2️⃣ Lack of Knowledge
Helicopters aren't tenders. Managing one requires an independent aviation program integrated with yacht operations. Yet, captains and operators rarely receive training on aviation management, leaving them exposed to significant risks.
3️⃣ Regulation Gaps
Current regulations like CAP 437 were designed for offshore platforms, not yachts. This leaves captains navigating complex, often unsupported, operational scenarios.
What Can Be Done?
Use twin-engine helicopters for enhanced safety.
Secure permits from aviation authorities and local communities.
Train beyond MCA standards—yacht crews need more than basic helideck training.
Standardize operations to eliminate ambiguity.
Audit processes regularly—fresh eyes enhance safety.
Helicopters in yachting and maritime aviation in general is evolving beyond current norms. Proactive training, sustainable practices, and strong aviation management are key to future success. Let’s raise the standard for safer, more efficient helicopter operations in yachting.
